so this was fun. These metal irrigation pipes are 30 feet long. they were stored in trenches on the farm and the native grasses grew over them, burying them. For 3-4 days the farmer and I hacked them out of the grass with a machete, loaded them onto the truck then placed them in rows across the patch. Without the pipes water could not reach the crops. This job was awful, and my favorite one so far.
Mama Sue came to visit from Kansas City. We did not know her before this trip and will hopefully know her forever because of it.
Location: Black Pointe Beach. Privately owned by the ranch.

For those who may not know, I am currently interning at the Kohala Mountain Educational Farm in the great state (that feels like another country) of Hawai'i.
The 23 acre farm is nestled in the 8,000 acre Kahua Ranch. We live on the ranch, surrounded by cattle, horses, sheep, and also one donkey that they keep telling me is off limits but we'll see about that. Mainly what we are surrounded by is clouds. We are at the highest point of elevation on the Big Island at 3k feet. Being constantly wrapped in clouds is exactly as dreamy as it sounds.
I am 2 weeks in to a 2 month stay. My comrade, Hannah, & I are helping Farmer Benjie incorporate from an LLC to a non-profit organization so that the farm may better serve it's mission and local community. The educational farm is also the largest pumpkin patch on the big island.
We spend some days doing farm work, (we have already planted over 5,000 seeds) and some days doing nonprofit work. Mostly what I've been doing is baking zucchini bread. Turns out they really like zucchini bread here. I think i've made 5 loaves this week. Will add more photos of that later, maybe.
I miss my family and my dear friends. I miss a darling boy that keeps getting tattoos without me, i miss skateboarding and my dog and cat.
That being said, I love it here. I love the new experience, new friends, and the freedom that comes with being so far from a place where everyone knows your name.
here we drink a lot, cuss a shit-ton, eat the spiciest foods we can find, work, play, and bake zucchini bread.
